Sean Parnell Sincerely Thanks Supporters - Concedes Congressional Race - Declines Recount |
|
September 18, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska
When I decided to enter this race for Congress, I knew it would be an uphill battle against a 35-year incumbent. But I got into it because I felt strongly about two key issues. One issue was restoring confidence and integrity to the way government operates. The other issue was treating taxpayer dollars with more respect and greater care.
Oddly enough, I face those very two issues now. Some three weeks after Election Day, the Division of Elections has completed its review of one of the closest races in Alaska history.
Every Alaskan who participated in the primary has now had his or her vote properly counted. It is apparent that Congressman Don Young received 304 more votes than I did. I congratulate him on his victory.
The margin between us is 0.28%. Alaska law now permits me to call for a recount that would be provided by the state. That provision in law exists for good reason. Counting ballots, like most other endeavors in life, is not always more than 99% accurate.

Parnell Campaign Awaits Overseas Ballot Count |
|
September 8, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska
"We understand there are overseas ballots yet to be counted and, given our strong support from the military community in state, we have every reason to be optimistic that the gap of 239 votes between me and Don Young will close."
Cathy Giessel, Field Coordinator for the Parnell campaign, noted that Parnell has demonstrated strong support for our nation's military and their families. In Alaska, Parnell is known for going to troop deployments and being there when they return, often being seen speaking with troops and airmen as they board the planes heading for Iraq and Afghanistan.
Giessel said, "Sean Parnell swept the vote at Alaska's military bases and posts on Primary Day, in the case of one military post by a four to one margin. And, it is certainly possible that the overseas ballots will reflect strong support for the Parnell for Congress campaign."
Alaska law provides many safeguards to ensure every vote is counted accurately. One of those safeguards is a state provided recount if the difference between candidates is less than .5%. The Don Young campaign has said they anticipated calling for a recount if the margin was close and they were down. The Parnell for Congress campaign reflected a similar position.
“We believe the people deserve the certainty and finality that comes with a recount if the difference between the candidates is close. We will await the final ballot count before deciding whether to request a recount,” said Sean Parnell.

Parnell Patiently Awaits Absentee Ballot Count, Ballots Could Take Two Weeks to Arrive |
August 27, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska
Sean Parnell, Republican candidate for Alaska’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives patiently awaits the absentee ballot count following an incredibly close Primary Election race.
This afternoon, Sean Parnell released this statement to the media:
“After a long night of narrow margins and back and forth leads, the Republican race for Congress is, quite simply, still too close to call. Based on current information, just 152 votes separate Don Young and me in the Republican primary. 152 votes equals 0.16% of the votes. And we believe that there are at least 4,000 absentee votes yet to be counted."
